Onward!

July 18, 2014

I turned 53 the other day, which seems fairly horrifying to the 20-year-old who lives inside my brain. High school was more than 30 years ago.

I am, however, encouraged by something I heard the other day.

Some senior citizens were asked what surprised them most about aging. They said that they were amazed at how much they keep learning as they get older – that their new knowledge builds on all that had come before, in an exponential manner.

I thought about it. From 40 to 53, I grew and stretched in ways that would have been unimaginable to myself at age 20. At times, I even feel like a fairly functional adult human being.

If I learn more from 53 to 66 than I did in the past 13 years, I am going to be one genius of a senior citizen. Hold on world. Here I come.

Happy Birthday!! I think it’s very true. But for myself I attribute that to the fact that I no longer have small dependent children that I need to devote all my time to. I can focus more on me, and I’m taking full advantage! Also, love your hair and covet your glasses and totally agree about the 20 year old inside our heads. Does that ever go away?

I love this picture, Sue! Isn’t ageing one of life’s best kept secrets? Let’s not tell the young about it. They won’t listen anyway.

Happy birthday! I’m not quite 50 yet but I know what you mean about the 20 year old inside your head. My Dad is 75 and he says he still feels like he’s in his 20’s! And he’s an avid reader and always learning too.

I feel the same, although I am much older than you (54 and a half) and only feel 37 in my head, but otherwise the same. And you look great !

Thanks, Lex. You are waaay too kind about the 40 thing. I will try to keep being inspirational, though hopefully not in “overcoming a horrible tragedy” way.
