Ginning Up Trouble
Covid-19 has forced us into some weird little strategies that may be more superstitious than effective, but we’re grasping at anything to feel safer.
One of mine is that I leave my groceries in the back of my station wagon all day after buying them (cold food and produce excepted). I figure the sun and heat will bake some of the germs, and time will cause some die-off as well.
Can’t hurt, right?
The other day I splurged on a $35 bottle of gin. My rationale was that it is made by a local company and they need my support, and I need a really lovely, beautiful gin and tonic every once in a while.
When I went out to my car in the evening to fetch my sun-sanitized groceries, I opened the door to be met with a wave of air that was positively shimmering with alcohol fumes. It knocked me back on my heels.
The gin is corked, not bottled with a screw cap. The heat had cause the cork to separate and fly out, and 5/6 of my lovely gin was now scenting the air of my car. The angels had gotten more than their fair share.
The good news though, is that my car got doubly sanitized – first by the heat and sun, then by all that alcohol circulating all day.

Update: I had contacted Ventura Spirits about their most recent batch of gin tasting of sesame oil, which was a little off-putting. They asked me to drop off and exchange the bottle so they could taste for themselves. I had to admit what had happened, and sent them the link to this post. They kindly offered a replacement bottle. How nice is that? They don’t just make good liquor – they are good people, too.

Love it!!!

Love you, Gail.
Aw man! Gin is a wild being.
It has the spirit.
Just don’t get pulled over
Or light a match.
Oh dear…I’m crying tears for your spilled gin. It sounded like it would have been quite lovely. So sorry for your loss.
Ventura Spirits makes great liquors out of mostly discarded ingredients – they have a vodka and brandy make from bruised strawberries that no one wants. The gin has the peels of locally grown citrus and herbs from the hills. I sent them a link to this and they offered to send me a new bottle!
I bring my groceries in right away, but I let the mail sit for 24 hours. My mailbox is a drop slot into the enclosed porch, so I just leave it there until the next day. Last week, my brother was here while I was out and when the mail came, he picked it up and placed it on my keyboard so I would see it. I would have punched him, but we’re social distancing.
Sorry to hear about your gin, but at least you gave me the idea of buying some cheap hooch to use as rubbing alcohol. I have to check my mom’s blood sugar and give her insulin shots twice a day and there is no rubbing alcohol to be found anywhere as people are using it to make their own hand sanitizer. If the situation doesn’t improve before I run out, I’ll buy a bottle of Smirnoff for disinfecting and maybe another bottle of Ketel One because I hardly ever drink but it feels like martini time.
Some people say that vodka isn’t high enough proof for sanitation, but it can’t hurt, can’t it? I was off drinking again for a while, but I have to say this pandemic has put me back on the wagon. I’m heading out in Gladis again, so I will leave without any alcohol and see how it goes. I hope you and your mom stay well.
I’m crying for you and laughing, too. Where are you and La G off to next?? Safe travels!
