Escaping Evangelism

I was standing on a freeway overpass holding a well-used cardboard sign that says “Protect the Constitution” at a “No Kings” protest with a few hundred of my fellow concerned citizens.

A beautiful woman and her husband joined me. We greeted each other and she said she was sorry she didn’t have a sign, so I gave her my American flag to hold.

We soon started talking, and I found myself speaking to a passionate advocate for those escaping evangelistic, high-control religious groups – as she had done. You meet the best people at protests!

Since then, I have learned so much from Stephanie Jo Warren’s substack, A Crack in the Stained Glass, and her podcast, Focus on Your Own Family (the title is a nod to the damage James Dobson did to children and families).

Stephanie has a strong grasp on what is happening with the convergence of evangelism and US politics, which is frankly terrifying.

I just wanted to give her a shoutout and recommend her work.
