Will Work for Food
November 5, 2013
I’m happy to report that the second attempt at training classes for Miss Abbie is going much better than our first.
There are several reasons for this:
- She’s a little bit older and wiser
- Her new class is at her favorite place on earth, dog day care
- She goes to day care, then has class, so she’s nicely tired and can pay attention
- There is no Horst to tell me that she needs to be yanked around by the neck
- The new trainer uses positive reinforcement methods, and Abbie really, really loves a snackie
So I’m happy to report that she is a GOOD girl who can SIT and DOWN and WAIT pretty well. Next we’ll work on those things for me.

Dogs really do want to please us….the reward confirms their success. And like Abby they need to be old enough to pay attention. I knew sweet, very ladylike elderly woman who in her younger days had trained assistance dogs for the hearing impaired. I’d been having fits with my dog and began asking questions. My friend raised her hand in a “stop” gesture and asked how old my dog was. Almost two, I told her. “Oh my dear,” she told me, “they’re not worth a damn until they’re four.” I about fell over laughing. And I learned to be a bit more patient while my dog grew up a bit more. In the end she was a model citizen…
Older dogs are easier, but younger dogs are so dang cute. The mischief cracks me up.
Good job! I left one of those “yank harder” classes in tears once and never went back. I do not intend to make my dogs afraid of me! Fortunately that was a long time ago and I think even that club has evolved since then.
This trainer is so much better. She has real affection for Abbie, since the place is where she goes for day care/funtime one day a week. Abbie just cracks her up with her antics.
Huzzah! I love everything about this. I want video. I want to snuggle Miss Abs. Hurray for force-free training! And double hurray for smart owners and wonderful dogs.
Look at how she hits that down like it’s her job! I love it, thank you thank you!
She seems to take great delight in “down.” Today she kept sitting during our walk. I realized that those were the spots she sat yesterday. She has a good memory.
Don’t forget: Primary purpose of her training should be: Be nice to Jim.
That is going to take a lot of snackies.
